The Miami Herald reports that 26 year old Cecelia L. Chinn was fatally struck on Saturday night as she and her husband attempted to cross Kendall Drive in Miami. The accident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. as they were crossing the eastbound lanes of Kendall Drive near Southwest 122nd Avenue.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that Mrs. Chinn made it across the outside lane and was attempting to cross the middle lane when she was struck by a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 23-year-old Linda McKenna. Chinn landed on the hood of McKenna’s car, and then struck the windshield and fell onto the pavement. She was immediately transported to Jackson Memorial hospital where she died a few hours later. Chinn was seven months pregnant at the time. The unborn baby did not survive the accident either.

Witnesses stated that McKenna had the right of way at the time of the accident as both the eastbound and westbound lanes had a green light when the accident occurred. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Fatality Analysis Reporting System Encyclopedia (FARS), 490 pedestrians in Florida were killed in traffic related accidents in 2008. Florida leads the way with the highest number of pedestrian killed in traffic related accidents in America, with a total of 4,414 fatalities reported .
