Second UM student hit and killed in crash

December 6, 2010

Just 12 days after Jared Paul Jones died from his injuries, another University of Miami student, 19-year-old Taylor William Emmoms, has been killed after being struck by a car on campus. Emmoms was struck on San Amaro Drive, just 0.6 miles away from the intersection where Jones was hit. The Sun-Sentinel reports that Emmons was crossing the street outside the Sigma Chi house where he was a fraternity member when he was struck by a 2004 silver Toyota 4Runner that was traveling southbound. Emmons was rushed to Doctors Hospital and died shortly thereafter.

In recent years, there have been several University of Miami students killed as they were walking near or through the Campus. In September of 2009, Bianca Milov was struck by a street sweeper as she crossed Aurora Street. In April of 2005, Ashley Kelley and Andrea Cinque were also hit as they crossed South Dixie Highway at Mariposa Court. Ashley died from her injures shortly thereafter.

The area seems to have a high number of pedestrian accidents due to the large number of people walking in the area and the high rate of speed of cars traveling in the area. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations Fatality Analysis Reporting System Encyclopedia (FARS), 490 pedestrians in Florida were killed in traffic related accidents in 2008. Florida leads the way with the highest number of pedestrian killed in traffic related accidents in America, with a total of 4,414 fatalities reported.
