Drunk driver causes fatal car wreck in Miami

January 4, 2011

The Sun Sentinel reports that 25-year-old Robbie Wissler and two of his friends were killed early Sunday by a hit-and-run driver. The driver of the vehicle, Cedric Williams, rocketed through a red light in a Chevy Astro Van and smashed into Wissler’s Honda Civic. Shortly before the accident, Miami-Dade police had received several calls about the driver of the van driving erratically.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration, in 2009 there were 909 fatalities caused by drunk drivers in Florida. This accounted for 35% of all traffic related fatalities in the state. In the United States, there was a total of 12,847 deaths due to drunk driving that year.

If the families of the victims choose to pursue a claim, they may be entitled to punitive damages if the driver was drunk at the time of the accident. Punitive damages are designed to punish at fault parties upon showing of reckless behavior such as drunk driving.
